米SURFER誌スタッフ一斉解雇、60年間の歴史に終止符か

1960年、故ジョン・セバーソンによって世界初のサーフィン専門誌として創立された『Surfer』のスタッフ全員が解雇されたことを、編集長のトッド・プロダノビッチが自身のInstagramで10月2日に報告。「The Bible of the Sport」（サーフィンの聖書）として名を馳せた60年もの歴史に終止符を打った。

2019年2月、当時の親会社であるThe Enthusiast Networkから、American Media社（現A360Media社）に売却されたタイミングで姉妹誌だった『サーフィンマガジン』が廃止され、サーファー誌もスタッフの約半数が職を失った。

毎月発行されていた紙媒体の雑誌も年4回に減らされ、今年の8月号が発行されないなど廃止の予兆が続いていた。

解雇前日に、60年の歴史の中で初めて、現アメリカ政権の環境政策などを危惧した政治色のある記事が突然の解雇のきっかけだったという噂も飛び交っているが、編集長トッド・プロダノビッチがInstagramの投稿でこれを否定。コロナ禍の影響だったとしている。

アドベンチャー・ジャーナルでの投稿によればデジタル媒体も廃止される模様だが、現在のところ正式な発表はなく今後の予定については続報を待ちたい。

なお最終号vol61-No3は近々発売される予定。表紙は、ドナルド・ミラルによるBlack Lives Matter運動の一環として行われたエンシニータスでのパドルアウトの1枚。「We’re in this together（共に乗り越えよう）」というカバーのコピーは、希望と共になんとも言えない寂しさを漂わせている。

This is the last issue of @surfer_magazine. The whole staff got let go yesterday (no, nothing to do with the heat from the Biden endorsement 😂, just the Covid economy), but I feel like we’re ending on a high note with this one. The cover shot was taken by @donaldmiralle during the Encinitas paddle out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Inside has some of my all-time favorite features from my all-time favorite surf writers— @smashtyn_douglas , @hzahorseman and @seano888 —and a piece by me about the LGBTQ+ surf community that was the honor of my career to work on, and I’m so grateful to the subjects for trusting me with their stories. Funny how you can work a job like this for 10 years and each issue is a completely new and different journey. I’ll really miss that part, and the mag in general, which ends on this issue after 60 years of publication. Hope you all enjoy the issue and thanks for reading over the years. SURFERは10/6に最終号に掲載した特集『How LGBTQ+ Surfers Are Creating a More Inclusive Surf Culture』を公開。その記事中で以下の記載をした。
「この特集はSURFER Volume 61, Number 3に掲載されたものです。パンデミックがSURFERの経営に影響を与えたため、雑誌最終号のリリース以降、スタッフは無期限に解雇され、すべてのコンテンツ制作が一時停止されました。いつかSURFERが何らかの形で戻ってくることを願っていますが、それまでの間は、最終号のこの特集をお楽しみください。」
